Administrative Professionals Week is always the last full week of April, with Wednesday of that week being designated Administrative Professionals Day.

Administrative Professionals Day recognizes and celebrates the work of secretaries, administrative assistants, and other office professionals for their growing and diverse contributions to the workplace. In the United States, it is customary to take administrative professionals out to lunch on this day, and/or to give flowers or other gifts of appreciation.

Administrative Professionals Week was originally organized as "National Secretaries Week" by the International Association of Administrative Professionals (IAAP) and a consortium of office product manufacturers in 1952. Mary Barrett, president of the National Secretaries Association (now called the International Association of Administrative Professionals) and C. King Woodbridge, president of Dictaphone Corporation, were serving on a council charged with addressing a national shortage of skilled office workers that existed at the time. Together with Harry Klemfuss, public relations account executive at Young & Rubicam, they originated the idea for a secretaries week campaign.

U.S. Secretary of Commerce Charles Sawyer proclaimed the first National Secretaries Week held June 1-7, 1952, with Wednesday, June 4th designated National Secretaries Day. Mary Barrett and C. King Woodbridge were invited to Washington, DC for the official announcement. The event received widespread publicity.

In 1955, the National Secretaries Association changed the date of National Secretaries Week to the last full week of April, with Wednesday of that week being designated National Secretaries Day. The name was changed to Professional Secretaries Week in 1981 when the National Secretaries Association became Professional Secretaries International (PSI).

In 1998, PSI changed its name to the International Association of Administrative Professionals (IAAP), to further reflect the expanding role of office staff. In the year 2000, the IAAP – official sponsor of the event – announced that the name would change from "Professional Secretaries Day" to "Administrative Professionals Day." The name change was made to keep in step with the changing job titles and expanding responsibilities of today's administrative workforce.

Headquartered in Kansas City, Missouri, IAAP remains the sole sponsor of Administrative Professionals Week and Administrative Professionals Day. IAAP continues to believe in the importance of this event in calling business attention to the increasing value and contributions of administrative professionals in today's workplace.

I have quite a few customers with trade shows coming up who are looking for bags. There are thousands of choices but here are some things to consider when picking out a bag for your next trade show.

How many do you need and what is the budget for bags is an obvious place to start however the bigger question to me is what would you like the bag to do. Is it simply to have a place for the literature, samples and other trade show swag that you are giving the visitors to your booth? Or would you like your bag to draw people to your booth? Or to remind them of your company when they return home? Or even to keep your company's logo in front of prospects months after the show?

My customer today told me that a salesman from his company judged the success of the bag they choose for last years show by what he saw at a presentation given by their number one competitor. He liked the sight of his competitor presenting the features of their product to a audience all holding bags featuring my customers logo. The bag was so handy that as visitors would pick it up they put all their other bags inside it. Upgraded so to speak.

Another customer recently told me that he had complaints that the bag they used, although popular, was hard to hang on the rack they use on the show floor. The staff manning the booth felt that the bag, a colorful flat bottomed shopping bag of recycled non woven material, was unwieldy because they would tangle and unfold when they were restocking the rack in the booth. The bag was so popular and their booth was so busy with people interested in their products that restocking became a chore that took them away from the prospects. I helped them choose a bag that lays flat with no gusset, no handles to tangle and that would stay flat so that they could fit more on the rack.

Not all my customers are that concerned with their trade show bag but no one can deny the value of your companies logo traveling the show floor on the easily seen bag hanging on the shoulders of everyone around them. Impressions are extra important at a show where you want to make sure people visit your booth.

Another thing to consider is whether you want the bag to mainly be used at the show or is it important that the bag double as a gift and be used beyond the show?

As marketers continue their debate over the next great advertising medium, a new study released by the Advertising Specialty Institute found it's not TV, print or radio that gets consumers' attention, but good old promotional swag.

This includes coffee mugs, pencils, retractable solar-powered flashlights or any other product bearing a company logo. Promotional products made up a $19.6 billion industry in 2007, per the ASI. Through surveys conducted both online and in-person in major cities, such as New York and Los Angeles, the institute also found that promotional products generate a cost-per-impression average of $0.004, compared to $.033 for national magazine ads or $0.019 for prime time TV ads.

The surveys asked 600 participants (who were mostly businesspeople over the age of 21) to recall promotional swag received over the last 12 months. Key findings include:
-- 84 percent of consumers remembered an advertiser based on a product they received.

-- 42 percent had a more favorable impression of an advertiser after receiving a promotional product.

-- Nearly one quarter (24 percent) indicated they are more likely to do business with an advertiser based on items they receive.

-- The majority of respondents (62 percent) have done business with an advertiser after receiving a product.

-- Writing instruments are the most commonly owned tchotchkes, with 54 percent of respondents owning them, followed by shirts, caps and bags.

-- Most (81 percent) promotional products were kept because they were considered useful.

-- More than three-quarters of respondents have kept their items for about seven months.

-- Among wearables, bags were reported to be used most frequently, with respondents indicating that they use their bags on average nine times per month.

-- Bags deliver the most impressions, with 1,038 impressions per month on average.

ASI president and CEO Timothy Andrews said the findings indicate that promotional products yield a higher ROI, along with very low cost-per-impression, compared to other advertising media. Moreover, items received this year still generated a high recall rate among recipients, leading to greater purchase intent.
"During a time when we're facing turbulent economic conditions, this research advises marketers and business owners to invest in advertising specialties (promotional products) now more than ever," Andrews said. "Advertising specialties provide measurable results for a very reasonable investment."
